Today marks the second day of the annual Goroka Show – Papua New Guinea’s largest singsing and one of the year’s most significant cultural events. Over 100 tribes from across the country gather in a vibrant, feathered celebration of culture, ritual, song, and dance. This event, dating back to 1957, was originally organized by Australian patrol officers, known locally as ‘kiaps,’ who invited local tribes to come together in a display of unity and tradition.
Your local guide will introduce you to the show grounds and its various attractions, after which you’ll have the freedom to wander and enjoy each performance at your own pace, fully immersing yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of Papua New Guinea.
Today, prepare for an exciting exploration of the neighboring islands, each with its own unique personality, customs, and cultures, promising an authentic encounter with the heart of Papua New Guinea. Our ultimate destination is the stunning Duke of York Islands. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife, as these crystal-clear Pacific waters are home to playful dolphins and the elusive dugongs.
Upon arrival, a welcoming local village will greet us warmly, inviting you to experience traditional weaving, cooking, and fishing. We’ll enjoy a village stay on the islands, offering a true immersion into local life and culture. Embark on a guided tour of the island with your group leader, then unwind and embrace the leisurely pace of island living. This promises to be a deeply enriching experience, surrounded by the natural beauty and warm hospitality of the Duke of York Islands.
Wake up to the tranquil rhythm of island life. Start the morning with a refreshing swim and time to enjoy the hospitality of the local community, embracing the peaceful surroundings and the welcoming spirit of our village hosts.
