For our PNG tour guests traveling from Australia, the trip to Papua New Guinea is straightforward, with direct flights making it easier than ever to start your adventure.
Flights from Australia
Direct flights from Australia to Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby operate regularly and from here, you can connect to domestic flights to explore the Highlands, islands, and more remote areas.
Do you need a visa for Papua New Guinea?
To visit Papua New Guinea, we recommend applying for a visa before traveling. While some countries are eligible for a visa-on-arrival, applying in advance will avoid complications.
The visa process is fast, with tourist visas usually processed in a few hours. You can apply online via PNG eVisa Application.
Best time to visit PNG
The best time to visit Papua New Guinea for cultural experiences is during the dry season, as the wet season (November to March) can disrupt local traditions. We strongly encourage respecting local customs and advise against using operators who ask locals to perform during the wet season.
Travel tips for PNG
Pack smart: When packing for Papua New Guinea, keep it light and practical. You’ll need breathable clothing, a rain jacket (showers can happen anytime), and sturdy hiking boots if you’re planning on trekking or visiting remote areas.
Don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent, and a jacket for the cooler Highland nights. Modest dress is important, so make sure your clothing covers your shoulders and knees, especially in rural areas.
A quick tip for those walking the Kokoda Trail – make sure you wear your boots on the plane when traveling from Australia to PNG. In case of lost luggage, boots are something we can’t replace in PNG, but we can always pick up clothes locally.
Avoid the Christmas period: Avoid traveling during the Christmas period (6th to 14th December), flights can get crowded and delays are common. We recommend adding an extra day before and after your trip, especially during peak festival times, just to be safe. At South Sea Horizons, we always factor in a little extra time in our packages to help you travel smoothly and enjoy the best experience possible.
Immerse yourself in PNG culture: PNG is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with over 800 languages spoken by its people. Through our PNG cultural tours, you’ll get the opportunity to connect with locals, learn about their traditions, and try local cuisine.
Travel safely: For a safe and enjoyable trip, it’s a good idea to stick to guided tours, especially in remote areas. At South Sea Horizons, we focus on your safety and work with local communities to offer amazing PNG tours.
