Walking in the Footsteps of History – PNG guided tour

Are you a history lover with a sense of adventure? Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the perfect destination for your next trip – combining a rich past of World War I and II history, sensational scenery and a vibrant culture. PNG offers an unforgettable experience for anyone wanting to walk in the footsteps of history.

Exploring historical Rabaul and Kokopo

Here at South Sea Horizons, we offer guided PNG tours to Rabaul and Kokopo. These are two towns packed with stories from the past. Rabaul, in particular, is known for its significant role during World War II and the volcanic eruptions that have shaped the region.

Discover the highlights that make Rabaul and Kokopo truly unique:

  • Japanese underground hospital: This fascinating site was built by the Japanese during WWII. Beneath the ground, you’ll find a network of tunnels, a kitchen, sleeping quarters, and camp areas. It serves as a somber reminder of the casualties of war and the resilience of those who fought.
  • Japanese submarine base: Built by Admiral Yamamoto during WWII, this base was a safe haven for submarines and soldiers during air raids. It’s a powerful historical location, helping visitors understand the strategic importance of Rabaul during the war.
  • Rabaul Hotel: This iconic building is one of the few structures to survive the catastrophic volcanic eruption in 1994. Since 1952, the hotel has hosted dignitaries, including Prime Ministers, sports stars, and HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York.
  • Yamamoto Bunker: Admired for its historical significance, this bunker was where Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto commanded the Japanese forces during WWII. It was also from here that the attack on Pearl Harbor was orchestrated.
  • Volcanic hot springs and Kaia-Tavurvur Volcano: Unwind at the volcanic hot springs, located at the base of the active Tavurvur volcano. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see the volcano in action.
  • Matupit Island: Enjoy a scenic drive around Matupit Island, which gives visitors a glimpse into local life and beautiful views of the surrounding area.

The iconic Kokoda Track

The Kokoda Track is probably the most well-known historical experience in PNG. It’s become a place of reverence for Australians, commemorating the sacrifices made by the ANZACs during WWII. This challenging trek is a journey of both physical endurance and deep historical significance.

South Sea Horizons has been offering Kokoda Track tours since 2008, giving visitors an opportunity to undertake a journey through history. While it’s a physical hike, it also holds a deep emotional meaning as you trek in the footsteps of soldiers who fought on this rugged trail and gain an understanding of the courage and sacrifices made during the PNG campaign of WWII.

Here’s why our guests love about our guided tours in PNG:

  • PNG-owned and operated: As a PNG owned and operated tour company, we are deeply rooted in the culture of Papua New Guinea. Our passion for the land is reflected in everything we do and our love for this location and its history drives us to offer the most authentic experience possible.
  • Responsible tourism: We believe in giving back to the local communities. Our tours are designed to ensure that the benefits of tourism go directly to the people of PNG.
  • Local expertise: We employ only local Papua New Guineans as porters, cooks, and historians. These locals are the best guides you can have – not only are they experts on the land, but many of them are descendants of the legendary ‘Fuzzy-Wuzzy Angels’ who helped the soldiers during WWII.
  • Personal porter for each trekker: Unlike other tour companies, we provide one porter for each trekker. A 1:1 ratio ensures our guests receive plenty of help along the way, making the challenging trek more manageable.
  • Leadership with heart: Our General Manager, Alan Manning understands what our US guests seek from their Kokoda experience makes our tours personal and meaningful.
