Discover the History of Rabaul and Kokopo on This Unforgettable PNG Tour

Are you a history lover? Ever been curious about Papua New Guinea and its rich, complex part during World War II? If the answer is yes, then our Historical Rabaul and Kokopo Tour is for you!

This full-day adventure is more than just a sightseeing trip – it’s a powerful, eye-opening journey back through time.

Where history meets nature

We know you’re here for the history, but the scenery in East New Britain is stunning! From the volcanic hot springs to panoramic coastal views, the beauty in this area is around every bend. This tour blends history, nature and local culture that gives you a true sense of place – sharing memories that will stay with you forever.

The underground hospital: a haunting reminder of war

Our Historical Rabul and Kokopo Tour starts with a visit to the Japanese Underground Hospital, built during World War II. You’ll discover a fascinating network of tunnels, complete with kitchens, sleeping quarters, and pulley systems that once supported the wounded and dying. Our previous tour guests found this space eerie and humbling – after all, it’s one thing to read about it, and another to experience it firsthand.

A glimpse into Admiral Yamamoto’s war room

The next stop on tour is the Yamamoto Bunker. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was the man who planned the attack on Pearl Harbour – he ran much of Japan’s Pacific campaign from this very bunker.

When you stand inside it’s easy to imagine how it was in wartime – a must-see for history buffs and an incredible look into a world-changing moment in time.

The Japanese Submarine Base

This tour also takes you to the Japanese Submarine Base, the place where Admiral Yamamoto sheltered his fleet from Allied air raids. The remnants of this secretive base are tucked away on the coastline and offer an interesting yet chilling look at military strategy during WWII.

The Rabaul Hotel

After spending time journeying through WWII history, you will stop at the iconic Rabaul Hotel. This charming, historic building has seen it all, earthquakes, eruptions, even royal visits. It was one of the only structures left standing after the 1994 volcanic eruption that devastated Rabaul. Today, it’s a symbol of strength and endurance, and it’s been welcoming guests from all over the world (including HRH Prince Andrew!) since 1952.

Volcanic Hot Springs

You can’t visit this area without a visit to the volcanic hot springs at the base of Mount Tavurvur. These steaming, bubbling springs are nature’s way of reminding us that this land is still very much alive.

You’ll get to see the mighty Kaia (Tavurvur) Volcano up close. It’s active, it’s dramatic, and it’s totally unforgettable. You’ll also enjoy a drive around Matupit Island, where you can soak up local life and maybe even chat with the friendly residents who live underneath the volcano.
