Over 1,300 Historical Items Safely Relocated

South Sea Horizons is proud to see that our recent corporate sponsorship to Papua New Guinea’s National Museum & Art Gallery (NMAG) has resulted in the successful relocation of important historical items.

Museum staff, along with the assistance of soldiers from the PNG Defence Force Supply Company successfully moved over 1,300 significant historical items from Murray Barracks to the newly built Aviation Heritage Centre at the National Museum. The acquisition is timely as PNG is close to celebrating 50 years of independence, with many of these items adding to the story of this young nations development.

The initiative to execute this exercise with precision and care was overseen by NMAG’s Acting Chief Curator, Mr. Gregory Bablis. Mr. Bablis mentioned that amongst the items relocated are a sizeable amount of war relics, including vehicles, weapons, arms and aircraft components.

Included in the move was one very special item; the iconic 1974 Jaguar once driven by PNG’s first Prime Minister, late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare. This vehicle, along with the many other historical items, will be on display to celebrate PNG’s Golden Jubilee this year.

We would like to extend our congratulations to Mr. Gregory Bablis, the PNG Defence Force Supply Company and everyone at NMAG and behind the scenes who worked hard to make this happen, and further preserve items that tell the tale of the history of Papua New Guinea.
