Experience the Magic of the National Mask Festival with South Sea Horizons

For anyone looking for an amazing cultural experience in Papua New Guinea, the South Sea Horizon’s tour to the National Mask Festival is something not to be missed. This engaging adventure is more than just a PNG tour – it’s a journey into one of the most beautiful and unique countries in the world.

Held every year in East New Britain, the National Mask Festival is an explosion of culture, music, ritual and art. Introduced in 1995, it’s a celebration of the mask cultures of the area and surrounding provinces, and over time has become one of the most important cultural events in PNG.

What makes this tour so special?

During this tour, you’ll get to witness the incredible Kinavai Ceremony. Just before sunrise, as the first light hits the water, canoes glide across the bay carrying Tolai men in full traditional attire. The air is filled with the rhythmic beating of Kundu drums and chants as the revered Tubuans arrive – a dramatic and sacred reenactment of ancestral spirits returning to shore.

The Tubuans represent ancestral spirits and are central to the spiritual and social structure of the Tolai people. Some of the traditional masks displayed during the festival are decades old, passed down through generations. Many are so sacred they’re rarely seen outside of their home villages, making this event a truly rare opportunity.

Throughout the festival, you’ll witness a kaleidoscope of performances from clans and cultures across the region. Expect powerful dances, distinctive music, and an incredible display of costumes and colours. Every group has its own beat, story and movement style, so no two performances are the same.

The Bainings Fire Dance

When the sun goes down, the Bainings Fire Dance is an awe-inspiring ritual performed only by the Bainings people. There’s nothing like it in the world.  Dancers emerge through flames, seemingly untouched, surrounded by the crackle of fire and the rhythmic pounding of bamboo instruments. Unlike many PNG cultures, the Bainings don’t use drums, the sound of bamboo clapping adds a totally unique edge to the experience.

Explore with local guides

Between the festival events, you’ll have time to explore the area with your knowledgeable local guide. You can swim with spinner dolphins just offshore, soak in the island’s natural beauty, and enjoy easy access to the Mask Festival grounds from your accommodation.

You’ll also have the chance to meet and connect with local communities, learn the stories behind the dances and ceremonies, and maybe even learn some traditional crafts along the way.

4 day/night or 6 day/night tours

Whether you choose the 4-day or extended 6-day tour, we’ll take care of everything – from airport transfers to accommodation, meals, and access to exclusive events. But what really sets this tour apart is the authenticity and connection. You’re not just a tourist; you’re stepping into the heart of PNG culture, guided by a team who lives and breathes the stories of this land.
