Port Moresby – November 2023 – South Sea Horizons, a leading provider of small-group experiences in Papua New Guinea, is deeply honoured and profoundly proud to announce its partnership with the Black Dog Institute and Inspired Adventures to host charity expeditions on the historic Kokoda Track.
The Black Dog Institute, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, was founded in 2002 by Scientia Professor Gordon Parker of the UNSW School of Psychiatry. Based in Sydney, Australia, the institute has been at the forefront of mental health research and support.
“In a world where mental health touches the lives of so many, partnering with the Black Dog Institute is an extraordinary privilege,” said Alan Manning, Managing Director of South Sea Horizons. “This organisation’s compassionate approach to mental health is truly admirable, and we are humbled to be able to support their vital mission.”
In November 2023, South Sea Horizons will host over 50 trekkers deeply committed to raising awareness and funds for the Black Dog Institute. This annual pilgrimage along the challenging 97-kilometre terrain of the Kokoda Track provides a physical challenge and offers participants a unique opportunity to gain profound insight into the conditions endured by the courageous soldiers during the Kokoda campaign.
Manning further added, “The Kokoda Track represents a powerful journey of resilience, much like the struggles faced by those with mental health conditions. We approach this endeavour with utmost sensitivity, recognising the strength it takes to confront such challenges.”
He continued, “Our Kokoda expeditions are designed to create a nurturing space for personal growth, allowing individuals to connect with nature and each other in a way that promotes healing and self-discovery.”
Since its inception in 2007, South Sea Horizons has been dedicated to offering innovative and enriching small-group experiences in Papua New Guinea and beyond. The company strongly emphasises conducting low-impact tours and prioritises environmental and cultural conservation in the regions it explores. Additionally, South Sea Horizons is committed to collaborating with local communities to help develop sustainable tourism products that contribute positively to the region.
Manning emphasised, “We take immense pride in fostering reciprocal cultural exchanges between the descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and the ancestors of the Australian forces who fought along the track. This connection is integral to our mission to promote understanding and appreciation among communities and perpetuate the relationship between Australia and PNG.”
South Sea Horizons is equally committed to providing employment opportunities at all levels of its business, including management, guides, porters, and cooks, as part of its dedication to being an equal-opportunity employer.
Walking along the present-day villages is also a poignant experience, to be greeted by big smiles and to witness the profound contentment that can be found in simplicity. This is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental well-being and the resilience of the human spirit.
