A journey to the heart of tradition: The Mudmen of Papua New Guinea

At South Sea Horizons, we take our guests deep into the rich culture of Papua New Guinea, allowing them to experience the fascinating customs, traditions of this island nation. Among its many interesting customs, the legend of the Asaro Mudmen is one of the most captivating.

Guests on our Best of PNG Experience have the chance to witness this haunting and unforgettable tradition up close.

A journey into the highlands

The journey to the Mudmen takes you through the breathtaking Daulo Passage, a mountain pass sitting at approximately 2,480 metres above sea level. As you travel through the Highlands, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of mist-covered mountains, lush valleys, and traditional villages dotting the landscape.

Along the way, you’ll see local villagers tending their gardens, children waving excitedly as you pass by, and the occasional bird of paradise fluttering in the distance. This drive alone is an experience, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the Highlands people.

Meeting the legendary Asaro Mudmen

When you arrive in the village you’ll be greeted by warm smiles and the sounds of traditional singing and drumming. But the real spectacle begins when the Asaro Mudmen emerge. Their ghostly presence, exaggerated by eerie masks and clay-covered bodies, is enough to send shivers down your spine.

According to legend, the Asaro people were once defeated by an enemy tribe and forced to flee. Seeking refuge in the Asaro River, they covered themselves in mud to remain hidden. When they later emerged, their ghost-like appearance terrified their enemies, who believed they were spirits. The trick worked, and the Asaro Mudmen became a symbol of intimidation in battle. Today, this legend lives on through their ceremonial performances.

As they move slowly and deliberately, demonstrating the ritual that once struck fear into rival tribes, you’ll feel transported back in time. Their haunting dance, paired with the deep beats of the kundu drums, makes for an unforgettable cultural experience.

Traditional fire-making

As well as the Mudmen, you’ll also get to witness another age-old tradition, the art of fire-making. Using only natural materials, village elders will demonstrate how to create fire from scratch, a skill that has been passed down for generations. You can even give it a go yourself!

Feast on a traditional Mumu lunch

The Mumu is an underground oven where food is slow-cooked using hot stones, banana leaves, and earth to trap in the heat. This cooking method infuses the food with smoky, earthy flavours, making for a truly unique culinary experience.

You’ll eat delicious sweet potatoes, yams, taro, fresh vegetables, and succulent meats, all cooked to perfection in this time-honoured way. Sharing this meal with the villagers is a heartwarming experience, as it’s not just about the food – it’s about connection, hospitality, and tradition.
